EBRD and IFC will help develop the energy storage systems in Ukraine

During the international investment forum RE:think Invest in Ukraine, held in Mariupol, Head of Ukrenergo Vsevolod Kovalchuk signed two agreements that will help bring investments to Ukrainian energy industry and increase the energy system security.

Ukrenergo has signed a Memorandum with EBRD on the joint development of the energy storage systems network with up to 220 MW capacity, and modernisation of the 220 KV Azovska substation in Donetsk region. EBRD will assist in development of the feasibility study for the design documentation, and the regulatory base to ensure energy storage systems’ commercial use in Ukraine.

Additionally, Ukrenergo has signed a consulting agreement with IFC for technical support in development of auctions for attraction of private investments in new energy storage systems. This project will include assistance in forming transparent and dependable business models for attracting private investments in Ukraine, development of the resulatory, design and tender documents.

These agreements are not the first step to foster the development of the energy storage in Ukraine. In 2018 Ukrenergo signed an intergovernmental Memorandum on cooperation with French transmission system operator RTE (Réseau de Transport d’Électricité) and its subsidiary RTE International. It provides for the development of the feasibility study for the first Ukrainian energy storage system

By 2035, the share of renewable energy sources in the energy balance will reach 25%. To be able to achieve this result, Ukraine has to develop at least 2.5 GW of highly flexible capacities. This would allow to balance the load on the grid during the peak hours, and  let the country develop more clean energy capacities.
